Quand on demande à Roshan Riahi Camp ce qui caractérise le mieux son parcours personnel et artistique, la peintre a souvent recours au mot patchwork. Il faut savoir lire derrière le sourire de Roshan et les patients agencements de ses peintures pour comprendre ce qu'elle entend par là.
Patchwork des cultures, puisque native d'Ispahan (Iran), elle arrive en France à 18 ans pour y suivre les cours d'arts appliques de l'Académie Charpentier, fait escale en Hollande puis à New York ou elle infirmera pendant trois ans sa technique à la célèbre Parsons School of Design. Chacune de ces étapes a contribué à dessiner une géographie affective ou des sensibilités culturelles distinctes, des apports artistiques traditionnels et des influences contemporaines ont progressivement fait naître un style unique.
Patchwork en peinture, car Roshan aime rappeler la nature artisanale de ses compositions: "J'ai commencé à créer parce que je n'avais pas de jouets. D'abord des poupées et des jouets en carton puis, plus tard, des patchworks cousus à la machine, dans le style des tapis de ma tante." Depuis 1971, le style pictural de Roshan puise dans le jeu des rapprochements et des différences entre les couleurs, les formes, les lignes et les points pour inventer des espaces qui lui ressemblent - passionnés et pudiques.
Roshan expose du 13 au 29 janvier à la Galerie Cosmos, 10 oeuvres peintes entre 1971 et 2010.
Attempts to describe her personal and artistic journey often lead Roshan Riahi-Camp to resort to the concept of patchwork.
In the first place, it is a patchwork of cultures. Roshan Riahi-Camp hails from Isfahan, in Iran, where she was raised before moving to France at the age of 18 to study applied arts at the famous Académie Charpentier. Her travels then led her to Holland and New York where she invalidated her technique during her three years at the renowned Parsons School of Design. Each of these thresholds has contributed to the making of an emotional geography where distinct cultural sensibilities, traditional artistic influences and contemporary designs have slowly nurtured and fermented her unique style.
At the same time, her work is a patchwork of paintings. Roshan Riahi-Camp strives to remind the viewer of the handcrafted nature of her compositions: “I began creating with my hands very early on, as a child, because I did not have any toys. I started with dolls made out of cardboard, then later, patchworks made of fabric, in the vein of the carpets my aunt used to make.”
Since 1971, the pictorial style Roshan has adopted finds its source and meaning in the delicate interplay, connection and contrast of colors, forms, fine lines and dots that invent spaces that truly resemble her – both passionate and discreet.
Roshan Riahi-Camp will exhibit her artwork from January 13 to 29, 2011 at the Parisian Galerie Cosmos, with a selection of 10 art pieces from 1971 to 2011.
